BIOGRAPHY

Born and raised in Malaysia, Tinling graduated from Wellesley College, worked for several years, and is presently working toward a Ph.D. in Chinese Literature at Yale University. In 1997 she was awarded the generous Wellesley College Stevens Traveling Fellowship to travel to Asia to further develop FireWife. FireWife is her first book. Tinling is fluent in Mandarin-Chinese and the Teohchew and Hokkien dialects. Her grandparents left China and settled in Malaysia in the 1920s and 1930s when Malaysia was a British colony. Her parents are first generation Chinese born and raised in Malaysia. The greatest gifts Tinling's parents have given her are her three brothers. Tinling now lives in Vermont with her husband and her baby daughter.

Her Favorite Things
Tinling loves colors, meadows, trees, fabrics, photographs, books, food, cooking slowly, eating slowly, dancing, the smell of rain, her daughter's laughter, the sound and shape of words, and the taste of lemon grass in Penang Laksa noodle soup.

bingyi.info Tinling's friend, Bingyi, donated a painting to a charity art auction in Beijing in 2006. The painting went for $16,000. On the home page of this website, the image to enter Forum is that painting. Since then, Bingyi has had solo exhibitions in New York City and Beijing. Tinling loves the ease and childlike quality in Bingyi’s paintings.
